Telnet

22 Jul 2026 · 1 min read

Telnet is an unencrypted remote connection protocol (port 23) — obsolete for real administration, but still shows up on CTF machines and legacy devices. All traffic, including credentials, travels in plaintext.

Usage

telnet <IP>

Also useful for manual banner grabbing against other plaintext ports (HTTP, SMTP...): connecting with telnet to a specific port often reveals the exact service version in the welcome banner.

Responsible use

These commands are for systems you own or have explicit written authorisation to test (labs, CTFs, contracted engagements). Using them against third-party infrastructure without permission is illegal in most countries.
