Shodan

What it is — Shodan is a search engine, but instead of indexing web pages it indexes devices and services connected to the internet: servers, IP cameras, routers, SCADA/ICS systems, exposed databases, admin panels... It constantly scans the internet and stores the response banner of every open port, letting you search by software version, port, country, organisation, or SSL certificate.

How to use it

Basic search by product/version:

apache 2.4.49

Combinable filters (require a free registered account):

org:"Some Company" port:3389
country:ES product:"MongoDB"
hostname:target.com

Search for a specific IP or domain:

https://www.shodan.io/host/<IP>

Shodan shows you what it already indexed in its last scan — it doesn't scan the target at the moment of your search. It's entirely passive reconnaissance: you never touch the target directly.

What I use it for

  • Passive recon in bug bounty: before launching any active scanner against a program's scope, I check what Shodan already has indexed for those IPs/domains — it sometimes reveals services the team itself doesn't remember exposing.
  • Finding forgotten attack surface: admin panels, unauthenticated databases, or dev/staging services accidentally exposed to the internet.
  • Confirming software version before exploiting: if a public CVE requires a specific version, Shodan's banner sometimes confirms the exact version without touching the service at all.
  • Understanding an organisation's context: what tech they use, which countries they have infrastructure in, whether they reuse the same configuration across multiple IPs.

It's passive reconnaissance, but the target is still real: always respect the bug bounty program's scope before acting on any finding.
