BuiltWith

What it is — BuiltWith is a technology fingerprinting web service, similar to Wappalyzer, but with two key differences: it keeps a historical record of which technologies a site has used over time (not just the current stack), and it offers lists of domains using a specific technology.

How to use it

https://builtwith.com/domain.com

The page shows categories (CMS, analytics, hosting, JS frameworks, email marketing, security...) and, in the history tab, when each technology was first and last detected.

Unlike Wappalyzer (which analyses the page in the moment, via a browser extension), BuiltWith maintains its own periodically-crawled index — that's why it can show history even if you've never visited the site before.

What I use it for

  • Seeing a target's stack evolution: whether they migrated from one CMS to another, or which technologies they dropped — sometimes reveals legacy systems still alive on forgotten subdomains.
  • A companion to Wappalyzer: when Wappalyzer's result is ambiguous or incomplete, BuiltWith usually gives a more extensive list of detected technologies.
  • Understanding an organisation's business context before an engagement: which marketing, analytics, or payment tools they use hints at their size and technical maturity.
