Sherlock

22 Jul 2026 · 2 min read

What it is — Sherlock searches for a username across 300+ social networks and platforms at once, and tells you where an account with that alias exists. It's the natural companion to Have I Been Pwned: HIBP searches by email against known breaches, Sherlock searches by username against currently active registrations.

TypeCLI (Python)
CostFree, open source
Repogithub.com/sherlock-project/sherlock

How to use it

git clone https://github.com/sherlock-project/sherlock.git
cd sherlock
python3 -m pip install -r requirements.txt
python3 sherlock target_username

Save the results to a file:

python3 sherlock target_username --output results.txt

For every site on its list, Sherlock checks whether that profile URL returns an "exists" or "doesn't exist" — it never logs in or interacts with the account, it only checks whether the name is taken.

What I use it for

  • Pivoting from an alias to an identity: when a bug bounty report or a phishing investigation only gives a username, Sherlock helps find which other platforms that same person uses the same alias on.
  • Checking my own footprint: seeing on how many sites an account under an old alias I no longer use still exists.
  • A starting point, not a conclusion: a username existing on a site doesn't confirm it's the same person — cross-reference it with more signals before treating it as confirmed.
