Maltego

What it is — Maltego is the reference tool for visual entity correlation in OSINT: it represents people, domains, IP addresses, emails and organisations as nodes in a graph, and automatically traces the relationships between them using "transforms" (queries against external sources) that keep expanding the map.

How to use it

  • Install Maltego (comes preinstalled on Kali) and sign up to activate the Community Edition
  • Create a new graph and drag in a starting entity: a domain, a person, an email...
  • Right-click the entity → pick a Transform (e.g. "To DNS Name", "To Email addresses")
  • Maltego queries the corresponding source and adds the results as new connected nodes
  • Repeat on the new nodes to keep expanding the relationship map

Maltego's value isn't any single search — it's visualising how dozens of loose data points connect, something far harder to spot at a glance in a spreadsheet or a list of terminal results.

What I use it for

  • Mapping an organisation's surface at the start of an engagement: from a domain to its subdomains, from there to IPs, from there to other domains on the same infrastructure.
  • Visualising relationships that aren't obvious in plain text: which employees share an email pattern, which domains share the same registrant.
  • Presenting findings: a Maltego graph communicates a chain of relationships far better than a list in a report.
