CyberChef

What it is — CyberChef, created by GCHQ (the UK intelligence agency), is the web "Swiss Army knife" for encoding, decoding, encrypting, hashing, and transforming data. It works by dragging "operations" (Base64, Hex, XOR, ROT13, gzip, JWT decode, extract IOCs...) into a "recipe" that runs in a chain against your input, updating the result live.

TypeWeb app (100% client-side, no server)

How to use it

Drag operations from the left column into the central "Recipe". A typical example for deobfuscating a payload: Base64 → Gunzip → From Hex, all chained:

Input: H4sIAAAAAAAAA...
Recipe: From Base64 -> Gunzip -> Extract Strings

Important detail: CyberChef runs entirely in your browser (client-side JavaScript) — nothing you paste is ever sent to any server. Unlike uploading a file to VirusTotal, here you CAN safely paste sensitive data (a client's payload, found credentials).

What I use it for

  • Deobfuscating payloads in CTFs: nested Base64 strings, XOR with an unknown key (CyberChef has a built-in XOR brute-force module), obfuscated JS — chaining operations is much faster than writing a one-off script for each case.
  • Decoding JWTs on the fly to inspect the payload during authentication testing.
  • Analysing captured traffic/logs: extracting IPs, URLs, or interesting strings from a large dump using the built-in extraction modules, without setting up a parsing script.
  • Teaching/explaining: being visual and live, it's the best way to walk someone through deobfuscating something step by step.
